Hit the mary river lagoon last thursday with a friends son, he'd never caught a barra before so with news that the water had been up out that way and was dropping I thought it'd be worth a crack as I'd pulled a few decent fish there in april, saw Brent Matthews at the ramp he was pulling out with only 2 dropped fish to report (silt?) scooted upstream to McKinleys Creek but it didn't feel fishy there turned around to go downstream and found this bloke drifting along having a munch on some very dead pig he was about a 12 footer and gave us the evil eye and plenty of hissing while we got some snaps and a bit of footage...nice way to show a young bloke what's around to see on the waterways here Found a small creek downstream running a dribble of colour my first cast got followed to the boat by a fish in the 60's that boofed as I lifted to placcy out that got the young blokes blood pumping I hooked and landed a couple of rats and then got smoked in the trees by a cracker that would have gone 90 easy while he turned the water to foam casting for a doughnut downstream to the junction with the billabong we stopped at another creek for some more rats and fish No.1 for the apprentice Saw AJay having a flick said g'day to hear they were doing it tough...we poked up to where the billabong was running into the river walked the bank and had a flick in some eddies for a boof each but no hookups, we headed back to the creek that had held fish earlier and saw AJay again this time with a screwdriver in hand and an awfully quiet motor we hung around while they had a tinker and got going again. hope you got that sorted out without too much pain mate..also returned his deckies prescription glasses we'd found on the bank earlier! Back to fishing and it stepped up a couple of gears with both of us landing fish regularly and plenty of jump offs and hits to keep the spirits up I lost another cracker to the trees and the young bloke ended up with a nice shiny 68 as his pb one last flick at a tiny dribble of water and I got boofed by another horse this one swam straight out into clear water but this time only to have the hook pull at the side of the boat she was a cracker high 90's about a dozen fish landed half legal size or better for a 6 hour day, fishing mainly in the shade was nice can't wait for some more rain to get the water flowing again

Hi Itsinmeblood,
Good on you for giving the opportunity to a kid to catch his first Barra, this is something that he should remember for a long time. And I bet that he will remember that big croc too...
