for my birthday on the 12.2.1997 pop took me down to mambi island for the weekend and had a ball. We left at 4.30PM after school and when pop finished work. we then took off to mambi island for a few days. we unpacked the ute for the camp and put the boat in. soon after that we were off to a couple of eddies that had produced fish before in the dry season and wanted to find out what it would be like in the wet. so we went and got some bait at a secret spot that we have only shown Dick Pasfeild and some tafe workers for the fish rec we had a couple of months later by catching fish and restocking them in lake arglye but they only got seven barra and two breeders. when we got the bait we took off to the eddies aand started fishing. that day we tried both techniques by using bait and lures we got most of the fish on lures. 100 flicks along the bank later we decided to stop for a while and have a rest getting ready to head back to the boat ramp. on the way back i remembed about an artical that i had read in the a mag about coroberee billabong how they were using weedless soft plastics and catching sarratoga and barra by trolling and flicking around the weed beds so thats what we tried exepted i tied on a barra classic as they work good in the system. we trolled along a weed bed we had found just before dark we trolled for half an hour back and WHACK!! the reel screamed and then saw it jump we got that hit just as the sun went down. i tangled with her for a while and finally got her in the boat got a measurment and a picture and put him back in the water it measured 98cm. a meter barra was my aim so we went back to camp watching out for the big croc that lives there. the next morning we got up bright and early backup to the eddies and tried the second one. so then we tied up to the tree and hung back puting out baited lines down the back and us up the front we were casting for a while and pops baited rod wen toff it was a nice barra at 67cm and was kept for dinner. i was still flicking and as soon as pop got his in i got hit and it was a little barra to little to measure. so after that we went to look for some weed beds pop trolled while i was flicking and got hit again on the poltergeist it also took a while to get to the boat and measured it and in the end it turned out to be the biggest of the trip 102cm. we then put him back but had to smim him he was tierd of the wrestle we had and he soon took off swimming buetifully. after that we started trolling past the boat ramp as we heard of big fish being caught off the ramp but nothing so we kept trolling until we got to the pandanas line so we went over to the over side of the river and reapeted the process and about half way pop was on! the fish nearly shook the trebbles out near the boat but we got it in nicley measuring it and got a photo back at camp then realesed it at the boat ramp. then we took off again and headed for collins creek in the brackish water i trolled the banks and when we came near the mouth it i got hit again this time it didnt jump and i thought it was a Powertail or something but it wasnt it jumped right near the boat and took me for a run untill i had to jumpup on to the bank and landed him saftely in the creek bank and got a pic then measured it and was so close 99.3 cm i really didnt care about how big it was as i already had a metrey under my belt and the same goes for my pop. As soon as we released it we headed backed to camp as it was getting late and got ready for the morning packed up and the went home..... tight lines regards Matthew
