Thanks John, that was really helpful. To be honest, I havent been all that interested in catching billfish until late last year I was off Dundee. I was trolling a halco lazer on my barra stick for some light tackle macs, when all of a sudden my reel was screaming with a sail jumping through the air very quickly in the opposite direction. Spat the hooks but got the blood pumping.

Thanks Guys, The next installment is going to highlight tactics & techniques for once you raise or sight a fish. This will probably be the last large installment for the written series but I was planning to perhaps do a video series after this starting with some bait rigging. I'm no expert at this by any means but I will probably start with a couple of different garfish rigs, a swimming mullet and a large Mackerel or Queenie skip bait. I've looked at alot of rigging videos over the years and one of the things that always irritated me was the fact that most of the time small but important steps were glossed over or that it wasn't clear what the presenter was actually doing. Anyway I hope to avoid this and give everyone a clear understanding on how to go about rigging bait. Is there anything in particular anyone would like to see done in the future? Cheers, John.

Hi deepblack Just read your blog fantastic stuff. I hooked up my first marlin last year at nth gutter by accident. We were bottom bashing and not much actin so I put a floating pillie out , when I was winding in to check the pillie this very large (about 2mt) marlin was following it up but about 5mt under the boat it spooked and swam off ,I had no trolling gear on board so i just re rigged the pillie with small sinker and dropped it again and again and again. After about 30 minutes of this BANG out of no where just in sight under the boat he hit, awsome sight I,ve never seen a fish light up before. I managed to stay connected for about 5 minutes he gave one head toss out of the water and was gone. Anyway I,ve just bought a new rig (610c b/crusher) and have been keen to get out and give it a serious go , your blog has been a great guide for me so thanks for sharing your knowledge Hope to post my first catch soon.
