I've look on the net a bit and some ideas myself but just what to see what the brain bank of FFF thinks about this. Positive and negative thoughts welcome.
Which single hooks (size, brand and shape) do people recommend to replace trebles with?
They'll be going on lures mostly the size of your average classic, but maybe also on some 15 - 20g halco's and poppers.
Do you just split ring them to the lure like a treble?
I'll be continuing to use trebles and more vigilantly crushing the barbs, (for release of fish and release of me) but I think no barb singles will be great for when the fish are really firing.

Hi there,
I do it on some of my chrome slices. It makes releasing fishes much easier.
I use jig hooks, so they point toward the top, just because it might also save me being snag on a rock when fishing land based. I get the hooks at the shop in town, pretty easy to find, they must be in all tackle shop.
Here is a little pic for you to see what it looks like.
Have a good day, Pecheur

Blinky; legendary, thanks mate really helpful
Brent; i have taken out a number and had one recently taken out of me; have used a few different methods, including; chop hook and sllice open and poke through, slice open and pull back, tie cord push down and flick out (i like this one the best and it was used on me painlessly) and once for a 10/0 hook through a 2 yr old kids chest, surgery and a diamond saw. And for fish I use thin SS locking pliers and some force which works but it just sometimes isn't that simple, a bad flick of the tail or mouth shut or just re-hooking them on the way out.. all simpler i think if there is just one hook involved.
Pech; that's awesome, that's just what I was after. When fishing for GT's and Queenies I'd love to have a simpler release, especially how maniacally Queenies throw themselves around the boat.

Here is a minnow I converted. Seems to work really well. Need to carry spare cable ties for the front hooks, as it will break when you hook up. I rig it that way so it is a little more snag proof and doesn't affect the action. Haven't dropped a fish after hooking up on that lure yet. For jigs I generally swing an assist hook off the tow point using ty-wire. The standard kevlar ones just don't cut it with macs

Good stuf Loki, that belly hook setup is known as a "Baker Rig"
I used this settup allmost exclusively when popping GT's on the East coast, very very rare to drop a fish once hooked, the cable tie is good but you can also use electrical tape for the same thing
Another rig I have been using recently on poppers is just an assist hook off the front tow point like a jig....surprisingly it gets good results, good solid hookups and never drop a fish, very easy for release without unnecessary damage from swinging hooks
I see you have used Decoy Sergants on it with a double split ring on the belly, you can also use the standard Cutlass hooks (or any other good quality hook with a large eye)
For jigging the macs you can also use a couple of swivels in place of the kevlar, just hope you don't hook a big noa cos they don't break
I have also been using barbless hooks, or at least crushing them for the last 18 years, (was safer for me and the kids!!) can't say I have droped any more fish from doing it. All my flies and lures have crushed/barbless hooks, now I do it out of habbit

Decoy 6/0 is plenty of hook for what your after, you could even go as low as 3/0 on some lures
one thing to note when changing to singles on barra style hardbodies is to make sure the hook can't hang up on the lure, you will also need to check the weight on some as any huge difference in weight will affaect the intended action of the lure, sounds simple to change out to singles but not all lures will benefit from it.
Hooks for GT poppers depend soley on the size of the lure and its design.
For instance, the smallest in my range is 180mm long and weighs 130g these are best rigged with 2 x owner SJ 41 11/0 on the belly and 1 x 13/0 on the tail
A little halco rooster would prob be happy with 3/0 - 4/0, again check that the hooks don't hang up on the lure

Passenger,
I use these in 4/0 for my barra lures http://www.motackle.com.au/index.cfm?pr ... ct_id=1144 They are about the same weight as #2 4x trebles, have a bigger gape (better hook ups) and if rigged like in my pic (rear facing backwards, centre facing out) can be walked through timber with the same confidence as smaller trebles. If you use the decoys, you would need to add an extra split ring to the rear and only one on the centre. I have also tried this, but can't say how effective it is as I haven't had a strike on it yet.

Crusty,
Sorry just read your top post. I got the idea for the minnow from watching vids about poppers and stick bait set ups over east. I too have been religiously crushing barbs for the last 3 years, but only on trebles. Funnily enough, on a recent trip I had half a dozen lures hanging off the carpet drying on the way back to the ramp. One of which i had just taken out of the packet that morning and due to leaving the pliers at home hadn't squashed the barbs. Guess which one ended up in my leg????? My fishing mates refuse to squash barbs, and they lose just as many fish (if not more) than I do. Also makes them a lot easier to get out of landing nets!

Single hooks are the go for soft mouthed fish like mackerel, seem to drop many fish after hooking up on lures with treble hooks . Some single hooks tolerate having the eye opened just enough to attach directly to the lure (less weight than a treble hook and split ring combined).

Do yourself a favour and give them a go .
7/0 mustad hoodlums featured here. Tried a couple of methods to fix them to the lure, all worked but liked tying them on with a bit of kevlar string the best.
No better connection than a HD single hook pinned in the hinge of the mouth. Most hookups are in this location so if your on you can dial up the pressure and not worry too much about the hooks pulling. Even so I've had hooks open up a bit including 10/0s.
Note the one hook up that ended up in the flank and the length of the tear from the pressure, was lucky on that one. A treble woiuld have pulled out.
