Ok, So I know black poppers work for Barra of a night time but what else does everyone use? I figure Bombers would be good on the flats but does anyone have any other suggestions? Does anyone use plastics? Cheers, John.

basically same lures that you use in day time, soft plastics work well at night time Ive found. I dont think it matters too much, maybe darker colours as they stand out more if a barra is looking up at em (thats if they can see em at all).

The Fizzers, loud rattles in darker colours..anything with a good tight action that makes a fair bit of noise. Only time I pulled a barra at night on a softy was, after a few JD's I shoved a small lumo stick into a clear prawn about 3" that I'd picked up at Happy Micks in Coolalinga..can't remember the breed..I threaded it onto an 8/0 limerick..head forward, point up..the belly weights kept it from rolling over..If you decide to give it a try...add a small ball sinker on the lower leg of your loop..as you work the prawn..the sinker smacks against the hook eye..simulates the click prawns make when they flick their tail. Just my two bobs worth.

Hi Deepblack,
I remember a post some time ago, I think but not 100% sure made by Back Cast, where he said that he loved old gold bomber painted in black for the Barra at night.
But maybe it is just my imagination, as I can't find the post any more...

I had my best night session a week and a half ago. All fish were caught on the biggest softies I could dig up. Funnily enough they were all white. So there goes the black lure theory for me! I was retrieving them fast too as they were heavy and sunk fast with timber below, prob only 400mm below the surface most times.

I like to use dark coloured lures at night, especially when fishing a bright moonlight night, the dark coloured lured gives a good silhouette. My favs are black bombers and B52’s. Had 50 +fish nights at Yellow Waters on black bombers.

Nights are amazing sometimes zman soft plastics are one of my favorites in darker colours but when the fish are on they will just about hit anything. when they go off the bite we usually try a variety of retrieves faster, deeper etc works well

Laser pros 120 3ft worked with a slow twitchy retrieve with good pauses works well. I use gold ones because thats what I got- dont think colour is important at night.

Softies for the win John. I will throw a popper on but have more luck with bigger softies in the range we use out in the harbour. The size you used last time works great.

Barra will eat any thing when feeding properly but depth is the key for me at night.
If they are surface boofing use a surface lure. If they arent use a big bomber. If that doesnt work use rubbers along the bottom. Hard part is finding the fish in the first place. Once you know the fish are there it is no different to day time fishing. Try all different depths and speed retrieves and match the hatch.
