I've found cotrast is the key for me, Moonlit night = dark surface lures, black night = light or whites. With minnows I use dark lures in clear water and whites in the dirty stuff and the same with softies. May not happen all the time but on average it works for me.

Plenty of people understand that barra hunt of a night so why not target them at that time. If you fish for them long enough you'll note that generally speaking they are more predominant of a night on the big moons, half through to full and back to half. That's not to say you forget about the dark nights. It's also worth noting that just because you fish of a night it does not guarantee a fish as other factors are all a part of the equation.
I've caught barra on most colours, though a light background with the lure profile broken up by stripes is a good option. Barra don't need eyes all that much compared to their reliance on their lateral line so colour is a secondary consideration for me.
You often get a much different response to a lure's action of a night than you do of a day. What works well for me is a less obtrusive presentation than what I'd use of a day. Definitely slower and shorter twitches, an action that is almost like trying to avoid a strike by sneaking the lure back to the boat. To a lessor extent I think breaking up the profile with black stripes is good, so the fish just gets a hint of something out there trying to keep low profile. Combine a couple of things to camouflage to lure and its passage through the water and the barra seem to respond. Of course there's no way you could get a lure to sneak past a switched on fish without it knowing its there. Sleeping or resting fish can be a different proposition but persistence can be like an itch, sooner or later it has to be scratched.
Favourite style of lure for the night? Real big minnow with a big fat old wobble.

Baz fishing at night rocks. Fav night time lure...Bills Bugs in purple/pink, Full black, and White with red and black spot. Its hard to beat the feeling you get when u hear the massive BOOF on the surface followed by drag peeling. Only prob @ night is when they spit the hooks, and you get nighttime kamikaze raids..

Last year I filled a 110mm squidy slickrig with foam and tried that as a popper, the tail pops along and makes a bit of noise. I had a massive barra boof it -well over a metre that had me immediately worried about the strength of the hook I was using! That really gave me the knee trembles .

Best session for one night is 26 on the Daly. 20-odd caught on the TigerLily Bomber. 16A. I keep trying fizzers but am yet to have any success. Still new to this whole fishing thing, but have a massive appetite!

For a popping softie the Z man pop frogs are pretty cool fished on a wide gape with a stinger for extra hook up power, the big Yank and Japanese swimbaits are well on their way to being a mainstay in my barra box with a couple of R2S Kongs and Sebile Magic Swimmers.

My mates and I quite often hit the Daly for an over nighter and all we use once the sun goes down are black bills bugs fizzers. The fishing is amazing!
