Where to throw crab pots in from the bank

Post by Chipspitter »

G'day,

I have crab pots but no boat. Just wondering if anyone’s willing to share ideas for throwing a few pots in from the bank – close to Darwin. The only areas I can think of are near East Point boat ramp and Buffalo creek.

I understand the risk of leaving pots and coming back hours later, but given my craving for a decent feed, I’m willing to give it a shot.

I was thinking leaving some a bit after the low and coming back somewhere near high - does that make any sense?

Cheers.

You have to be careful, a bloke was taken in Queensland while going back for his pots.

Used to be able to get into Shoal Bay and chuck pots off the bank if you didn't mind a bit of mud.

Today Buff Creek is the main one, Howard River a bit later in the year, bank of the Finniss, few spots at the top of the harbour arms, Bynoe Harbour has some places, and Cox Peninsula.

Thanks, Matt. Much appreciated.

I have a healthy fear/respect for our reptile tenants, so duly noted.

"The Parks and Wildlife Commission NT (PWCNT) have trapped 114 saltwater crocodiles so far in 2017, more than double the 53 they had collected at this time last year."

Down the bottom of that press release, there are some nice pics of a 4.2 lizard caught at Southport. THere's also a map of all the crocs caught this year - interesting.

Cheers.

Used to walk into rapid creek from cas beach access side. I always tied 100pound handline mono to my traps and then tied it off to the tree, that ment that nobody would notice them and pull them on me unless they were really looking for the line, most of the time you will struggle to find it your self so leave a marker!

You still need to have ID on yr pots to keep it legal .... use an aluminum can and old ball pt pen to sort yr details on it.

usually its on yr float.

Good luck .......the crabbing will get better in a couple o c months once the fresh water dies off a bit. The bucks are still in there all yf round though but jennys can be 30km or more offshore this time of year.
