Hey everyone I'd like to start by wishing everyone a safe and fishy 2017
Now , Iv been having some trouble chasing sharks landbased
And was hoping you blokes could shed some light on a few questions I have
Iv been casting baits for a few weeks around the city area and have only hooked up once and managed to lose it after a tense 45min battle (bit through my Cable leader )
So I'm in need of some advice
Where are some good sharky landbased spots (roughly ) ?
Should I be burlying up for them ? Or even soaking baits in tuna oil
Do they sense cable trace ,should I be using single strand wire ?
Floating a bait vs sinking bait ?
Also what species do we get here in Darwin and what are there favourite baits
(Iv been catching tarpon and using them )
Any extra sharky info will be greatly appreciated !!
I intend on catch and releasing all sharks safely
Cheers In advance everyone !

Re: Landbased sharking tips !
I've never had any problem catching them by floating a livie off the back of the boat, usually when fishing for macs. By livie I mean any by-catch with a hook in it. I have even lobbed a 60cm queenie that wasn't going to swim off out the back. Didn't take long for a 3m model to show up.

So would you say floating a bait is preferable to sinking one?
I'm still not sure where I should be in the water column
Bit hard to figure out when you don't have an target species
Iv herd nurse sharks are a commen bottem feeder

I just lob them out the back. No floats, no weights, let it kick around and do its thing.

Pilchards on the bottom off fisherman's Wharf will pick up plenty of Black Tips!

Yes I've caught a few small black tips, using livies land based. Fishing on the bottom with a running sinker and wire trace.

I think the real tip to finding a good shark is burley. You need to bring them in so any place where the trail goes to deeper water is good. Old fish frames anf tuna oil normally does the trick. They seem to love spotty mackrel if you can get them, espevially as a livie.
how many is enough lures, rods and reels. Is there a magic number, considering you usually only catch 1 fish on a single lure on the one rod and reel your casting with.

Big bait dead or alive = big sharks
Dead bait topped with squid to get a bit of the pickers excited too will do ok ...
Berley helps heaps too.
tuna oil soaked through a few frames or shredded c.tfish n old bait in a decent sized mesh cage that wont get eaten made from a bit of stainless steel n small finch bird wire is the go so you can keep usung it for a while. Sink it to the area that you are running the baits so they will swim up to them in the scent trail.
Good luck mate hope you don't get blown away too often there's some unstoppable groper out there that will snap telstra rope like cotton.

Re: Landbased sharking tips !
baits on the bottom usually only results in nurse sharks or black tips. Ive caught mainly bull sharks as well as some whalers floating out live or dead baits which are usually small trevally or stripey's.
