Gday all,
Just wondering if anyone out there had any hints or tips for using soft plastics off the rocks or beaches, I have been playing around with them a bit and have only really landed flathead and one Barra. I have been using the Gulp grey and white jerk shads. Should I be using a different style or type? And does my retrieval change pending on the fish being targeted?

We do really well with flick baits off the rocks and wharves -cast out and let sink ,then retrieve with a fast erratic motion-queenies go nuts on them.Goldies love 3inch powerbait stick bait type plastics- they usually nail them on the drop- the secret is to use really light jig heads -I use 1/16 oz nitros for the strength. Barra -we do well with hollow bellies or split bellies- slowly rolled in. Squidgies are good to but I revove the jig and cut the weight downwith side cutters- they work better with a slightly faster retieve than the hollow/split bellies. Hope that helps.

I always thought a bit of weight in the jig head helped with the action? I will give it a go also. As I have stated I'm only just learning soft plastics so all this advice is great. Thanks Lats.

I am no barra expert by any stretch of the term, but I know that they are lazy and very much ambush predators. The slower you can get that jig to move (in my experience) the more strikes you will get from barra. And with small flicks of the rod tip will have the jig dancing around erratically. I have seen many big barra at night near pylons under the lights. What they have a tendency to do is sneak up on the bait and I have seen them sit a foot below a bait or lure for what seems like ages, just looking at it. As soon as it twitches... BOOF!!!
If you have spin gear, have a look at Squidgy finesse jig heads (no good in current). Instead of lead heads they are made of resin. If you can cast these to the areas that hold fish you will be on the money. BUT, what ever jig head you get, make sure the hook has some beef about it as the lighter ones more suited to bream and flathead down south will straighten.

Sorry... meant to also say with jig heads, use as much lead you need to cast to areas that hold fish or enough lead to get down to where the fish are sitting... no more.
