I'm not quite sure where to post this, so if it is in the wrong spot I apologize in advance.
I'm thinking about taking a drive to shady barrage and try my luck. I have searched the forum and google and haven't really got any answers to my questions I been looking for.
All I know about this place is that you have to be very cautious of crocs, dam, I dont even know where it is nor how to get there yet, but that's apart of the adventure I guess, who knows I might even get lost and find some super spot X, which I highly doubt but one can wish.
The questions I'm hoping some of you guys could answer for me is mainly,
Is it tidal there and if it is what's the best tide, incoming or outgoing ? When is the best time to fish there? ( obviously the run off that I have read, but what about this time of year, ie... Tomorrow morning ) or sunrise, sunset, noon ? I read something about not using treble hooks, only single hooks, or something along those lines. And tackle, I have hard body lures and soft plastics, would that be enough to take it on.
Any help wouldn't go astray, I'm running blind up here at the moment and trying to work it all out.

Mate, the downstream side of the barrage is closed to fishing for the wet. You can only fish upstream and that is not tidal and all fresh water. No treble hooks within 100m of the barrage so soft plastics are the go unless you want to re-rig your hard bodies. Quite frankly I would not bother at this time of the year unless you are going to do it at night and know what your doing. Not to say that you don't but experience in fishing the place after dark is a huge advantage.

mate its worth a drive out there just to see whats waiting for you in the water at night. leave the rods behind in the car and take a big powerful headlight or similar. you will think twice about even standing on the barage at night. I fished the fresh side a month ago and as i trolled towards the barage (from the fresh side) i lost count of BIG crocs very close together all the way from the barrage down a km or so.

Lol, with comments like this I'm not sure I ever want to fish there. I'm not exactly to keen on the croc side of things as it is, and very cautious getting to close to any water, I think i might take that advice and do a night trip just to spot light it.

There is a cheeky croc there on the Salt side. I think he had me lined up one day when I was 100m downstream from the barrage on my lonesome with some bait... Careful mate

I didn't think you could bait 1km either side of the barrage!!!! i fish the barrage all the time and my advice is get a headlamp and use it night is best i mainly fish the fresh with anything that has glitter in it, the rock bar that is about 15-20m off the barrage on the fresh side i just let my SP's sink then drag them across the rockbar, i use weedless too otherwise you will get snagged everytime.....7 out of 10 cast you will get a hook up

Last time I was there it was 100m either side, for all I know it could be 1km now. Then it will be from the bridge to the mouth, lol. I don't go there much anymore, place has gone downhill in my books.

100 meters either side for bait fishing single hooks only(no trebbles) I fished Shady at night for a decade and a half 3-4 times aweek in the early days Any place is only as dangerous as you want to make it Common sense and safety go hand in hand A good headlamp is a must and a moonlight night If the crocs are there, the fish are there,if the fish are there the crocs aren't hungry Be adventurous but be with a friend,4 eyes are better than 2 Be aware but don't be scared The closet I have been to being hurt by a croc there is when one washed over the barrage in full flood and nearly knocked me over as it tumbled through It does have the highest concentration of saltwater crocs in the world , WHY? Because it has the fish population to sustain them You get to know the regular residential crocs after a while and most of them know not to get too close but never become complacent My tips for you The rules are posted on the billboards out there Enjoy your fishing Regards Shaun
