Hey guys,
I was born and raised here, yet I hadn't been hooked on fishing until I moved away to Queensland. Coming back home now I am keen to get fishing.
I am wondering what would be a good general purpose rod (weight class) and line strength should I be using if occasionally a good sized fish takes my bait?
I ask this as I tried Stokes Hill the other night on a light rod 6 or 8 lb line (which is usually suffice for landbased on the Gold Coast), on raw prawns and all of a sudden my drag screams (nearly cut my finger off) and within 30secs my line snaps clean. This happened three times! My friend reckons it was moonfish. Rather exciting but disappointing was unable to pull it in.
Hopping to Kmart soon for rod/reel/line so hopefully you guys can help!

Mate fishing prawn baits -especially the cooked variety, from stokes hill wharf will see you getting smoked by big golden trevs over and over -got smoked there 15 times on 80lb braid one arvo- you can land a few if you use 50lb+ hard mono .usually standard line around darwin is 30lb braid.

30lb braid good all round reel abu 6500 on a good old ugly stick 8-10kg wont sent you back big dollars but good for throwing a few lures to hooking a few jewies and pretty hassle free items. check all the tackle shops as well for price you would most likely find allthats stuff would be cheaper or do you a few deals then kmart and bcf and all that. dont no a whole lot about spin reels but have would spend a bit more on them to get better reliability and drag out of them.

Quite a few small sharks around the wharf ATM. I use an 'Ugly Stik 7'6"/Okhuma TRB80/30lb braid/40lb Asari leader. Handles pretty much every thing. Baitrunner allows live baiting for big 'skinny', and will send a lure/spinner a mile. Just get something you're comfy with, keeping in mind the types of fish you'll be likely to encounter. A drop gaff is a must for the wharf, there are some big fish there, and getting them up on the deck can be a mission without one.
