Hi all, New here but not to Darwin. Anyway, don't own a boat, never will probably as I get sea sick in a bathtub but I do like to catch the odd feed of fish where I can. I mostly go to take the missus out as she like to catch fish. Any fish really. Anyway, have you all noticed that Bream seem to be harder to catch (from the land of course) and the ones you do catch are fairly little? Went to Fisherman's Wharf today (first time there) and doesn't it get all fast and furious come sundown! Cars not fish No fish of course... Anyone want to share a Bream spot? Thanks

Landlocked... Bream fishing up here is usually better in the dry when the water is cooler, that aside we did get 2Bream,a 62cm Barra & a reasonable Jack from the rocks about 100 metres to the left (as you drive in) of the Berrimah ramp a couple of weeks ago. There appears to be a walking track out to the rocks, when we caught them the tide was incoming by about an hour about 3 days after neap. Have also caught them around Channel Island rocks on a few occasions...Cheers

Thanks takinapunt, Yeah, haven't been there for years, but we go to Channel Island a fair bit as it seems our best spot lately. Not a bad haul you scored mate. Other usual haunts are Elizabeth River behind Virginia and even the creek on Wickam Point rd (seriously bad for midgies) but they haven't really been producing much at all. Only bait size spanish flag(?) and fingermark. Cheers

Prawns are the best, squid is a good backup if you go through all your prawns or just want to be different, lol. Might have to brave the Virginia midgies and give that spot another look in someday. Used to catch HEAPS of butterfish from there years and years ago. They are now also quite *rare*... Good little fighters though!

Hey Landlocked. A top spot for black bream is next to the boat ramp at the downstream end of Hudson Creek. (someone correct me if Ive got the name wrong...its the one that runs out to the west side of Channel Island). The upstream boatramp also fishes very well for bream but only at the top of the tide. You get to the downstream ramp by following the Channel Island road...over the Lizzy River bridge, left onto dirt just after the railway crossing...first right after about four km....about 1 km then over the railway xing...right straingt after xing...follow it to the boatramp.
Like takinapunt mentioned the dry is by far the best time for them but the good news is that the hotter months are better for goldies which frequent the same sorts of areas ...rocky oystershell rubble.....and take the same rigs. On a making tide fish bloodworm hooks on a light leader with running sinker straight out from the ramp....when the water hits the base of the mangroves take off the sinker and throw just a baited hook as close to the mangroves as you can.
Midgies are there...not many places where they are not...bushmans.
Luck

Thanks Mud and olfart, Just mainly wanted to catch something edible when we go out, without getting too high an expectation seeing as we are only bank fishing. I'll have to look them up and head out there. Don't worry, always watching out for the lizards

Forget bream up here mate- too many bigger and better fish around -land based too!
Bream just taste good. But I'm not fussy, as long as the Powertail and puffers stay off the line! Barra are ok, but I've caught plenty (still fun though) and I don't think they are all that great to eat. Howard river has plenty for landbased people (in the fresh) but they are the worst ones I've eaten. Pity, cause they are soooo close to me.... What else is there to catch land-based?

lol..you have to be more specific with seano LL. I think the only things he has yet to catch land based are a Mexican walking fish and a couple of species of whale.....
Seriouisly though i agree .. there is little that can beat a finely filleted fresh bream fillet lightly fried in butter, garlic with a squeeze of lemon...
Land based target fish for a good meal might include threadfin salmon, trevally, shark, goldies and whiting off the beach at casuarina. There are many options but Im with you...apart from the size not much can beat the humble bream!!
