Did they ever get off that island?
i dont think they will ever find the thing. Its got me buggered why the airlines cant just send the info real time to the satellites and down to a database so they dont have to rely on black boxes. they currently do it with maintenance issues so they know exactly what needs to be dont before the plane arrives at its destination so the maintenance team can prepare. why not with cvr?

Yeah its surprising that they don't have some kind of full time epbird transponder built into the black box that can not be turned off and can survive a crash and transmit a location for at least 7 days. There are numerous times it has taken considerable effort to find the black box even when the crash area is relatively well know.

These aircraft carry a number of beacons.

One that they carry that most don't know about is a ULB (underwater locator beacon). Completely separate to the other beacons and the black boxes. Usually attached to the outside of the aircraft.

It operates on 37.5 kHz (very low frequency) similar to the long range communications used by submarines when under water. If you've seen the huge antenna systems at NW Cape in WA, they are for underwater communications. They're huge because of the low frequencies and longer wavelengths involved.

The ULB transmits a "ping" every second and is capable of being heard underwater 3-5 km away or more in good conditions. It has a battery life of at least 30 days. Searches are slower in deeper water as the distance between tracks has to be reduced. What Angus Houston was doing with the towed sonar array search was needle in a haystack stuff.

In the case of the Malaysia aircraft search, it was carried out by surface vessels towing passive (listening only) sonar arrays tuned to 37.5 kHz.

Surface vessels generate acoustic noise. 37.5 kHz is twice the frequency that a person with very good hearing ( a young person) can hear.

The best chance to find that aircraft while the ULB was still operating was a submarine.

They're built and designed for "silent " running and have very accurate acoustic bearing indicators. To use a submarine meant that surface vessels would have to bugger off to eliminate man-made noises.

We should have been able to send our whole submarine fleet ( both subs) on the job if they were both in going order.

At one stage the searching vessels were chasing their own tails following a 37.5khz signal accidentally emitted from one of the vessels.

I saw the lot in Los Angeles where Gilligans Is was shot. Couple of bushes , some sand and a few rocks. Would never have believed it from the show. Also saw where McHales Navy was shot. A small pond with 3-4 different jetties.

They can send a video link over a billion kilometers through space after 9 years of travelling but they cant get a signal right from the bottom of the ocean yet
Got me beat

That's true Shaggs. Only a couple of km.

Bit like Met Bureau who can predict temperature change within 1 degree in 50 years time but can't get it right for tomorrow.
