Sooties will take anything when in the mood - a bit of red meat will stay on the hook better than bread.

got bored when sitting in a boat at the bank of the mary river lodge so i popped on a little hook and squished on some bread .dropped it over the side and got smashed! after that i was catching them by the dozen bread worked fine
the trick is to REALLY squish the bread till its compact.
