Sunday Morning (31Aug08), Palmerston Game Fishing Club in conjuction with some great sponsor conducted a Junior Angler Education Clinic at the lakes down in Gunn.
My eldest, Riley is a mad keen fisho so I registered him at Happy Micks a few weeks earlier (registration only cost $10) and took him down for the morning.
Over 100 Kids from 6yrs upwards participated. The day commenced at 8am with registration then the kids were broken up into 4 equal groups. The clinic consisted of 4 different sessions of about 40 minutes each, including: Marine and Water Safety, Knots, Casting, Lures and Lure Retrieval concluding with the presentation of a Daiwa Rod & Reel Combo fully spooled with mono line and a soft plastic, a small plastic tackle box filled with small tackle items and a BBQ that was prepared by Rotary. The message for the Clinic was "Fish for the Future".
I was speaking with Mick Chambers during the clinic and the gear that the kids received normally retailed for over $150. I was also speaking with Rob McLeod and it appears that next year Palmerston City Council are prepared to further support this great activity.
If you have young kids and wish to get them involved in fishing this is an excellent opportunity to provide them with a basic knowledge in a safe fun environment and at the same time they recieve some really great gear.
My lad has been practicing his casting all week on the back lawn with his new rod and reel, he loves it.
IMHO the day was a great success, well done to all organisations involved in this clinic.

I concur.
Having been away overseas for 5 months now, my 2 boys haven't had the opportunity to go fishing at all. I good mate of mine from Katherine was kind enough to take them to the kids fishing clinic and they have not stopped raving about it since. My eldest has been down the rocks on Larrakeyah every other afternoon flicking lures with his new rod. They'll be itching to get out on the water when get back next month.
Many thanks to all involved for putting on a great show!
