Yes.
I'm no shark expert, but I would assume that it would be a bit like crocs moving into areas inhabited by humans, in that if you take out some sharks near the coast, then what would tend to happen is that shark population pressure from further out will just 'push' them back into the coastal areas anyway.

Great whites travel huge distances. The shark that killed the young bloke could be in SA next week. The big ones follow the whale migration
I used to surf every day in NSW. Everyone i knew had some story of a ‘big fish’ encounter over the years. I used to get very concerned when bait schools would dart around under you at high speed. Something was chasing them

I think we are seeing GW's learning that we are food source and taking a mental note for their next meal.
reducig their numbers reduces the risk. target the inshore and frequent visitor individuals I say. But first lets tag as many as possible and in an effort to confirm that it's one or two GW's with a taste for human chum.

i am up fpr the tagging programme but I already fish alot and berley up heaps in the south west of WA and have not seen a GW come around in years. We used to see them a couple of times 14 years ago when we were targeting mako sharks 1 km off the coast and the sharks were not spotted off any beach. The fisheries dept have tried to catch the sharks after attacks but have not seen them, they also tried to catch GW around the SW corner for tagging but could not attract any, there is a number of GW out there that they have tagged off Perth with a proximity beacon that sets off alarms along the coast of Perth if they come close to the beach, the problem is that a guy got taken not to far from a reciever bouy and NO alarm went off. not just the tagged sharks in the area but the more tagged the earlier warned.

the surfers in that area of western australia know the risks and still go into the sharks enviroment thinking it won't happen to me,but sometimes it does happen to them-it's there own fault.

They have been around for a long time, an old boss of mine from WA was telling me that he used to surf near Albany when whaling was still happening. He said you could see them munching into the dead whales as they floated in the bay before processing He said that the best break was close by but the GW didn’t worry them. It’s a risk you take. When i used to dive, we used to travel to areas where sharks could be seen while underwater (nurse not GW) The dive operators had a waterproof copy of JAWS at the 10' deco line just as a pisstake
Shark attacks play mind games on us much more than the everyday things we do (walking across the road, driving a car, etc) which are much more dangerous. The stats show that there have been only 50 fatalities from sharks in the past 50 years. Unfortunately, there have been 5 deaths in recent times.
Its weird how we tend to feel more for the poor buggers who have been killed by sharks than the thousands who die on our roads every year. We are a strange breed

I've surfed a fair bit in WA and lots of parts the coast line in Aus (cactus beach, argh!, place smells like great white) and I say keep them protected.
Everyone knows the risk before they enter the water, it's extremely sad when someone dies but that is no reason to kill every GW near the coast. Life needs some edge to it. We don't want to be living in a padded room wrapped in bubble wrap with a helmet on.
And it keeps those with better things to live for off the amazing waves down there.

Good point nomad re vehicle deaths.
Mind you, I'd rather be hit by a truck than slide down a shark's throat.
Or worse, eaten slowly by Norwest blowies ...
But cars and trucks deliver our food etc, hence we put up with the noise, pollution and fatalities. White sharks, while spectacular, are not nearly as useful for carting apples ...
