No way, we have only 10 nights in Darwin under 20 degrees, that means less influence from high pressure systems that drive the winds. Ask the NT BOM the same question.

I'm with Didjamurra on that. Everybody thinks its windier because several of the weekends have been windy. The dry season is very mild with no big High pressure systems sitting in the Bight.

The two last posts have the same name on the registered email address, bit odd.
Almost every time I have looked there has been a big high pressure system sitting in the bight. Also seems to be a lot of 20-30 knot forecasts.
No doubt the stats are there either way for anyone to dig up. I agree that weekends have been a bit unlucky.

dont know.
just the barra fishing has been so cr.p. normally i would be fishing rivers and billabongs this time of year.
but because this isnt producing id say more people are just looking at alternatives to get there fishing fix.
hence more people who wouldnt bother with blue water fishing are trying this year.
so you get more stories of people being smashed offshore by the wind.
this is the only reason i have been trying bluewater fishing over the last few months.

Finally got a break today, launching at dinah beach old mate says 'good day for it', the weather was calm as, headed over the other side of the harbour, ended up with a large rock cod, moonfish and goldie, then the wind started again

Re: Has Darwin been windier than usual this year?
The answer is yes if Willyweather averages are correct.
http://wind.willyweather.com.au/nt/darwin/darwin.html
May 1 to July 15, 2011 average 7.8 knots
May 1 to July 15, 2012 average 8.6 knots
May 1 to July 15, 2013 average 9.0 knots
Keep in mind this is an average between the periods of no wind and the weekend gales
If this three-year annual trend continues then Darwin will have an average dry season wind of 29 knots in 50 years, it'll blow the Vegemite off your toast
And no, I don't think the upwards trend will continue like that ...
I can't see anything on BOM that provides annual wind speed anomalies.

I think the wind is more constant but less aggressive. I don't think we have had those 30knott days too often but more constant 15 to 20s. Could be wrong but that's how it feels.
