Tapa Bay road access lost under Kenbi claim

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine no-go zones, mining disasters etc here.

Tapa Bay road access lost under Kenbi claim

Post by Matt Flynn »

From AFANT

Recreational anglers to lose access to Tapa Bay

The Amateur Fishermen’s Association of the NT (AFANT) was disappointed
to recently learn that recreational anglers will lose access to prime land
based fishing locations in Tapa Bay as part of the Kenbi Land Claim
settlement.
AFANT was first briefed by the Government on the Kenbi Land Claim in late
April and we were initially extremely pleased that the settlement did not
appear to have any detrimental effect on recreational fishing access.
Provisions were made in settlement for access to inter-tidal areas, camping
on several of the Bynoe Harbour Islands, road access for land-based fishing
locations and planning for future boat ramps.
AFANT Executive Officer Tristan Sloan said “AFANT was originally informed by the
Government that there were 11 roads and tracks that guaranteed permit
free access for recreational fishermen to the Cox Peninsula. We understand
that this has now been renegotiated to 10 roads and tracks and we have
lost access to Tapa Bay through the future closure of the Tapa Bay Road”.
AFANT understands that during negotiations to settle the Kenbi Land Claim,
agreement was reached by the NLC and the CLP Government that when
road corridors are widened, due to the loss of granted land, access would
be closed off to the public on other areas of the Cox Peninsula as part of a
‘and swap’ process.
“The future loss of permit free access through Tapa Bay Road has come
about due to the planned widening of the Cox Peninsula Road. This raises
serious concerns that in the future recreational fishermen will face further
loss of access on the Cox Peninsula” said Mr Sloan.
AFANT prides itself in showing leadership in addressing issues that affect
recreational fishing in the Northern Territory and believes unless
transparency is at the forefront of CLP Government communication with
recreational anglers there will continue to be distrust over future land
settlements with indigenous owners.

Just add it to the list................................ seems to be that access to fishing areas is inversely proportional to population growth. Firkin :bs:

I'm glad reasonable access has been maintained, but it is disappointing that in order to upgrade roads that the locals will obviously be using other roads need to be shut.

It's disappointing to see these areas closed off.But unfortunately as of Tuesday
We will just have to get over it.Have heard that some sort of permit system will be introduced. The Kenbi rangers have been fairly active over here
Both on land and in their boat.I am not sure how much legal backing their patrols will have.
I would suggest people just step back and let it settle down.

I disagree. Sit back, let it settle will be a sign of acceptance. Then the first poor soul who doesn't follow the "new" rules or over steps the line gets pinged and charged to be made an example of. If 50 cars drive down a track that of Tuesday they were no longer allowed to do so and respectively camp out it will send a clear message that we oppose this closure. The people of Darwin recently had a win by making noise over traffic lights no one wanted. We need to start doing the same regarding these closures or more will follow.

I agree. We should not be publicly funding a blatant racially motivated exclusion.

Wonder where the primary source of funding comes from for the Kenbi Rangers?

Agree....no access....no upgrades! If they are going to introduce a user pays permit system then they should use that money for infrastructure and services....

Yep, can't have it both ways.....if it is user pays....then that's a business as far as I'm concerned...to have such a large amount of land locked up so close to a capital city is an issue for me to be honest. Having said that the issue of land rights and ownership is an emotive one and I understand there would be very strong feelings for people who's families have lived there for generations. However, how do you think it would go down if we locked up on half of the Brisbane River and made people get permits to access that part of town? How about we close off the whole Northern beaches area of Sydney and have residents pay royalties to continue to live there and any non residents who want to use the beach have to apply for a permit? What about the Swan River banks and estuary.......ok folks...you can't use the parks anymore or go in or on the river anymore unless you apply for a permit.....how would that go?????
Well that is in essence what is happening here, I get that the issue is complex and emotive and I don't have the answers....but I can't but feel I am getting shafted.
