Gidday folks,
Looking at buying a pair of portable radios for both fishing and 4x4. Just quering what radios work best UHF or VHF? Will be using at relatively short distance mainly but may need further range aswell.
Any help will be appreciated.

If your going to use the radios for 4x4 as well... Get UHF, you shouldnt really be using VHF for non marine related activities.
JB HIFI have some good cheap UHF kits at the moment, i just got some from there for work.
Also.. Technically, you should be licensed to operate VHF if your out on the water.
Stick with UHF if its just for Yahooing..!

Too easy mate, what brands are the way to go and what range would you expect to get?

Re: Portable radios.
Youll basically get what you pay for... More $$$ spent = more range and quailty etc..
I bought a Uniden twin pack, about $90... 5watt units and work well over a few kilometers..
(You can get 3.5 watt & less, personally i wouldnt get under 5 watt.)
But GME have some good 5 watt handhelds or Motorola units are good....
Handhelds have come down in price, theres some good ones out there.
If your looking for a twin pack, keep in mind batteries!! Look for the kits that are rechargable, kits with 12v car chargers included...stuff like that.. Comes in handy and your not stuffing around with buying batteries all the time...

I bought a Uniden 5watt 40 channel from WOW years ago for hunting on some stations I was going to
I now throw it in the barra punt when I go out
It cost me 300 back then and I'm happy with the way it's working
It's a UHO 76SX-NB
