Fuel injection diagnosis is electronic or on a swapping boxes level, even at a dealer. Balancing carbs on any outboard that has trappings in the manifolds is a simple procedure with $20 worth of home-made kit (4-tube water manometer) and takes an hour at most. Any motorbike shop could do it as well. Cleaning carbies out is a fiddle but not beyond the average home mechanic. Everything else is just an engine.
However these are lost arts these days. When I was a boy people did these things as a matter of course. Now we either revisit these times and learn how to do it if it's important to us, or just pay someone and put up with it. I do it to keep my brain alive and my manual skills up there. I calculate that servicing my big engine myself would save about 3% of the hourly cost of my boat. Not a huge issue to get worked up about.....
Biggles
