Video of the Gunn Point fish kill ... https://youtu.be/R8961ZVo_Rw

Interesting that it looks like all the same species.

Vid reposted with permission from original poster.

The fella who took the vid is Jack Waddington - he says they were mostly juvenile blue salmon with a few herring. He said the creek smelled a bit like sulfur, a sewerage type of smell.

I am not aware of any sewer there, can anyone else enlighten???

Maybe one of the late storms washed in a bit too much nutrient in the unseasonal hot weather?

Sounds like a bit of anaerobic (no oxygen) decomposition which generates hydrogen sulphide (rotten egg gas), which happens to some degree in most creeks and at shady camp occasionally. No air would normally kill most species not just 1 (and a few randoms). Some drop off quicker than others of course. That might be the cause or combined with water temp. But primarily with 1 species affected you might expect something specific to that species like disease. They often never know what's causes a fish kill and write it off as low oxygen. High temp (harbour water seemed warmish the other day), large number of fish, anaerobic decomposition all suck the oxygen out of the water.

Might be the blue salmon have higher oxygen needs.

Usually the sulfur mud problem is after mud has been significantly disturbed.

Get a bit of sulphur mud around here from time to time. Usually the morning after a big scotch fillet and a bottle of red. Damn stuff would kill an elephant, poor salmon wouldn't stand a chance .... :P
