I've got the 998 and the extra width screen is definitely an advantage especially when using the side-imaging. As Till said, get the biggest that you can afford that is practical for your boat.

Yep got the 998 and it's a good unit read bottom at speed in deep water once transducer is setup and shows fish I set my side imaging up after a solid days river fishing and had it showing barra and unreal pictures but I done an update and it reset my settings and never really bothered with it after that so something to remover when updating units right down all your adjustments and settings But over all I like it and the pitchures it shows

Thanks for the info just wasn't sure if the screen that is larger with the same pixel rate would be of any benefit but you all appear to believe get the biggest screen you can.

Hi Justin, got a couple of screenshots from earlier this year.
With the wider screen you can really zoom in to the snags and actually count the fish on them. The bigger the screen the more you can zoom in!! This shot was taken at the mouth of the McArthur in March, we counted four large fish marks on the sounder and caught four barra in the 70-80cm range from this one snag.

Bigger is definitely better in this case.

I am also dreaming of a Humminbird Si unit. I know for a fact that I cannot have one of the larger models on my console due to the configuration of my boat cover when travelling. I am thinking of getting two 798's.
I see the following advantages:
The 798 have quick release brackets. This allows me to remove them easily and they will be harder to have stolen from my boat when they are locked in my shed. They have ethernet capability and can transfer data between them. One can be the GPS while the other is doing SI etc. Both together give you a similar sized view to that of a split screen on a 998. You can get a control box to allow the use of one transducer The likelihood of both having a failure are pretty slim. If one does fail the other does everything on a slighter smaller screen, at least you still have something to see out the trip and get you home!!!!
I know there are disadvantages, but for me the weight is leaning towards two units. I can afford one soon and add the other later. If you shop around, the price difference between two 798's and one 998 is not that big.
Just another way of adapting to achieve a largish screen when you are restricted by your console or funds.
