2017 12v minn kota on a 490 topender

Post by Ado84 »

First time posting so hopefully im in the right spot here.

Just wondering if anyone has put the new 2017 model 55lb 12v MK on a 490 topender or similar size boat?

Dont really wanna have to go up to the 24v for obvious extra expenses. But also dont wanna kick myself later for not spending the extra dollars.

Would love to hear any experiences or advice. Much appreciated.

I had a 55 mm on. 4.8,with a 60. Held it fine.
I would guess would be fine for Barra fishing. If yo do blue water you maybe wishing attimes you had a big one with the wind and tide it can come off.

Get the longest shaft you can.

Thanks heaps mate. Yeah i will be doing mostly harbour and blue water thats why im worried the 55lb might not be enough on big tides.

Ive been told by io marine the 55lb should be enough but still something in the back of my mind saying to go the 80lb.

Just really dont want the extra cost and weight that would come with going the 24v option.

Cheers mate. Do you do much blue water? Do you get a full day fishing out of the battery. Do you just run a stand alone 12v system for the leccy or have you wired it up so the battery will charge off the motor once the crank battery is topped up. (Sorry bout the million questions)

I fish blue water in the dry a bit. Mostly on neaps. Barra the rest of the year. If you are fishing flats then 55lb is adequate. It held last weekend on the Daly too but only just, river was pumping at 9m+. Need to trim your outboard up to reduce the drag on the boat. I have an onboard charging system (Redarc BCDC 20amp) and I run my fridge on the same battery. Easily get a full day fishing. Need to keep the charge up when in storage too though.

80lb is obviously better but depends on what you want to spend and how much weight you want to carry.

Power of the 55 should be enough - but if you can get a longer shaft that would be well worth it for fishing in the ocean as the shaft will come out when it starts getting choppy.

Yeah was thinking the same not sure if the MK do a 60" shaft in the 55lb but i know the Motorguides do. Will have to look in to that.

I have a 55lb on my 4.8m Hydracraft and it holds fine in all but the strongest runs, trolls great as well.

Cheers Blinky. Do you know if you can get the 60" shaft on the 55lb at all?

I just sold my 55lb, It couldn't hold gandpa off gandma. 460 renegade, any tide over 3.5m movement and it was useless.

Whilst the 80 will cost more, and weigh more, it will be much more efficient than a 12v system. You will get longer runtime from it.

To put it crudely, as the wise man Ruy Lopes often does, it's like having a 12 inch dick. If she only wants 8 inches, you just leave the other 4 outside. But its always good to know the other 4 inches are there in case you need them.
