G'day all
Darwin Game Fishing Club caters for the young, the old, the new, the inexperienced, the experienced & the confused. Our flagship event is the NT Barra Classic which runs for the 28th time this year. The Junior fun day/clinic is also run in conjunction with the tournament which caters for about 60 kids out in the comp boats for a day, bus trip & generally just a great day for the kids.
We have re instated the NT Billfish Classic this year which will continue next year which will continue to improve with the information obtained from the competitors survey & the aim to have this tournament at the level of the Barra Classic.
We have two club competitions that run from the 1st of June until the 31st of July, the fish must be caught in the NT.
One is a Barramundi comp only where you can only submit your best Barra for the month (55cm or bettter). At the end of the year your 12 fish are totalled & the biggest aggregate length wins, if you don't catch a fish each month & still end up with the highest total aggregate length you would still win. Braid can be used in this section, but still under the GFAA rules for a Fresh water fish, its a great area to involve the entire family & develop the kids fishing skills at the same time.
The second one is a pre test line comp run under GFAA rules, all recognised game fish count. The idea is to catch gamefish that equal your line class or better, your top ten point scoring species (only one Shark) are aggregated together & the highest aggregate wins, if you didn't score ten different species but ended up with the highest total aggregate you would still win. The trick is to be able to target & capture as many species as possible over the year & end up having option to select your ten best point scoring fish EG a 9.0 kg Spanish Mackerel on 3 kg pre test line would = 300 points, if you scored a better/higher point scoring Spanish Mackerel on lighter lighter line you would delete the other fish & update with the new one, but a savy fisho would chase other species to increase the overall point score a lot quicker. Both sections have good prizes & we also have a boardfish for line class fish.
We try to have a number of social outing including a weekend at the South Alligator, a sand bar party off Cullen Bay etc.
We also have a number of members who aren't competitive & are involved with the club for a number of reasons& thats fine also.
We hold our meeting on the first Tuesday of every month at about 6.30 pm at the Ski Club, no cost involved & all welcome. The meeting revolve around club related requirements & information sessions such as chasing big Barra, bait rigging, tides/tackle, locations etc + membership draws.
The club has a fairly broad experience range in its members & most members are happy to assist in any areas they can from Flyfishing to Billfish & or cover topics that people enquire about & or are interested in.
If you wanted to join the club its $77.00 a single, $110.00 a family which includes the AFANT fee, if you want to join the GFAA its not included & off memory I think its about $25.00 which allows you to submit record claims, receive the bluewater record book etc.
The club also has a GS Marine extreme boat which is available for club members to utilise at a reasonable fee (conditions apply) EG able to demonstrate competent in the use of boat & knowledge of local water ways etc. Our web site is www.darwingamefishingclub.com.au to view, its currently under reconstruction but hopefully it will be updated & completed in the near future but still viewable.
In a nut shell Darwin Game Fishing Club has been around for a long time & a number of the FFF members are involved with DGFC, so it just depends on what spins your wheels & what you want out of a club, plenty of info to be obtained to assist the learning curb & add that to spending time on the water chasing fish & you will improve your abilities, cheers Balls.
