My family loves mud crabs which means I end up crabbing half a dozen times a season, but even the nice big round pots are lucky to last half a year, still they only gotta get one crab in them to pay for themselves. You should have seen the crabbing in Arnhemland, I did an article in the NTMAG next edition the crabbing was great.

Use to use wire pots as a kid, very heavy depending on how close knit the wire is and how many crabs in it! Had to make a arm on the side of the boat to help pull up!

I got some from the roadside at HS - i paid $25 each for them - they have them in the city at $35 each - only problem is that you have to bend the entrance to stack them flat - after a few times bending them the wire hardens and it breaks so the pot is useless. Still a pretty good pot - good business really if they dont last long as the punter needs to buy more. i think the guy still sells them out there.

I used to make them in Cairns for some of the tackle stores. I sold them for $30 each but that was only because the tackle stores said most people would buy a $10 pot over a $40 pot and they needed to put a mark up on them. I still have 3 of my original pots made 7 years ago (that I kept) and they ALWAYS out crab my 2 bought round ones (A moment of weakness and needed pots in a hurry). The tackle stores took about 40 pots off me, and with little profit and 2 VERY sore hands and no time to fish, I gave up.
I think the secret is to make them easy to use. One little feature I put on my pots is a heavier gauge bait box inside with an external door, so at the end of the day, you open the door and drop the rotting bait overboard without having to touch it.

i got my wire pots from a vietnemese pro crabber, i think 30-40 bucks each. Take 2 secs to bait up as the bait holder is external. Great set up and the crabs cant seem to get to the bait.
I think it's croc proof a i usually see crocs hanging around the pots but the bait remains untouched.
