Re: Croc crackling
I saw a documentary on a similar topic earlier in the year. Every year the turtles return to the beaches from which they hatched over on a particular island around north Queensland (I forget which). From a radius of around 300 km all the 4m plus large crocodiles make the trek down the coastline with the 50 km leg across the sea to the beaches. Its kind of like a right of passage for them as they need to be large and strong enough to overcome the seas currents for the bounty that awaits.
Once there they find the turtles laying and start picking them off. As the lunar calendar rolls towards the full moon the number of turtles laying and the number of crocodiles arriving peaks. There are dozens of 5m crocs lining the edge of the water laying in wait and they gorge on the turtles for a few days. The biggest and bold leave the water and hunt the turtles down on the beach. The smaller guys tend to hang bang and head them off as they approach the water.
Then as the full moon peaks the hatch lings emerge and the eagles, sharks and crocodiles unleash Armageddon on the turtles. It's a wonder that turtles are not extinct from this act alone.
