I have been the target of boat thieves in NSW a while ago. Its devastating for the owner as well as the poor bugger who buys the boat from the crooks.
Club Marine and others have introduced a National Marine Register to help stop the thieving bastards. Nationally boat theft costs us around $11M - there is no real way until now to check a national register. Heres the article

Yeah the current HIN is useless. no one ever cross checks anything.
They only work AFTER the stolen vessel is found.

National boat rego would help stem this problem............
Can't operate a boat without rego... can't rego a boat without the HIN.....
As long as they spend the revenue on infrastructure like boat ramps we all win

Absolutely Skippy I agree, bring in boat licences as well linked to car licences. NT Gov might be able to afford more Fisheries Coppers then.
