Just wondering what the best ways to keep mud crabs alive is. I usually put them straight on ice but I wanted to try keep them alive and fresh a bit longer.

as said above.
just tie them up. if they are in between wet heshen bags they just think they are hiding in the mud. if you can re - dunk the heshen bag in saltwater every 6 hours or so they will last for weeks. have kept them for up to 11 days this way.

over xmas i stocked up cos the family was in town, got one of those shell pools from kmart think 19 buck special went and filled it with water fresh from the beach, dropped a fountain pump in the bad boy which pumped water into a bio filter, (20lt bucket, poly pipe on bottom then layers of foam cushion and pillow filling and at the bottom you put a 90 degree elbow and the water runs from the bottom into the shell again) kept the water cool, smell free and crystal clear, dropped in some steak peices every day, the lil nippers kept for 4 weeks kept adding and just topped up with fresh salt water every weekend. had about 15 bucks in their they had room to move around, didnt tie em up they all got along. well except for the first lot i got i didnt cover the shell and one got out in the yard, we have a small beagle as a pet, but never did see that crab, still looking for it to this day, but if anyone in wulagi sees a stray muddie return to me please!
covered it with some fencing wire after that, but i swear they were the fullest and tastyest crabs ive ever had, they tasted so much cleaner guess the seawater from the beach maybe purged them out? fark they were the best muddies

Well, you can tell by the way I fill my fork, I'm a crabbin' man, no time to talk. Motor's loud and the sun is warm. I've been dropping pots since I was born. And now it's all right, it's O.K. And you may fish the other way. We can only try, to understand The big mud crab's effect on man. Whether you're a brother Or whether you're a mother, Keep your muddies alive, your muddies alive. The rope's almost breakin' And the dilly is a shakin' Keep your muddies alive, your muddies alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, Muddies alive. Muddies alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, Muddies aliiiii-iiii-iiive. Well now, I crab the low and crab the high And if I don't get crabs then I really try. Got the steel crab pole, and mud on my shoes I'm a crabbin' man, and I just can't lose. You know, it's all right, it's O.K. I'll live to crab, another day. We can try, to understand The big mud crab's effect on man. Whether you're a brother Or whether you're a mother, Keep your muddies alive, your muddies alive. Feel the rope breakin' And the dilly is a shakin ' Keep your muddies alive, your muddies alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha,

Blowski- if your adding water to replace evaporated salt water you should add fresh water only, otherwise you will end up with water with an unnatrually high salt content as the salt doesnt evaporate only the water. Thats what they do at indo pacific near the wharf. You could keep left over livies in there too!
