mud and crabs : Crustaceans, Squid, Shellfish

Hi all. Was having a bit of fun with my 5 y/o son (John) in Rapid Creek last week crabbing. I'd given him a few locations to choose from, and he chose the most difficult one; no existing path or clearing through the mangroves. Took a good twenty minutes to push, shove and bash our way through before we got to the creek and luckily the mud wasn't too bad. We only had two pots with us (thank goodness!), and inbetween checking them we went 'exploring' which was great fun if you are five.

Eventually trekking between our 'base camp' and the two pots we started to stir up the mud a bit and we soon had a nice buildup on our boots and legs, and a couple of falls saw John with a nice coating on his clothes as well. :roll:

John was having a great old time, and out of the blue came up with the saying 'you can't have mudcrabs without mud'. To the best of my knowledge he hadn't heard it said before, and I tried Googling it as well with no hits. I come from a dairyfarm in Victoria originally, and there was a saying that 'where there's mud there's money', ie. rain = mud & grass = milk = money (hopefully), but I haven't heard it used for over 25 years, so there is no way he adapted it.

Has anyone heard the expression about mud and mudcrabs before, or is my son just a genius?!

Oh, BTW we came home with two nice muddies to eat. :mrgreen:

When I was joining this forum I couldnt think of a user name so me and the missus were discussing it and our 4 year old grand daughter said to me "your name is Jeff and you catch fish so your name is jeffish,,to easy pa",,,I still have chuckle every time I type it in

Thanks for the replies; I think I'll just have to agree with 86 and myself that my son is a genius.

I assume it is also fair to claim the saying about mud and mudcrabs as his original work too.
