Ive finally got around to buying some crab pots, big thanks to frenchy for great prices on the collapsible rectangle ones. Was wondering if anyone has caught crabs landbased from elizibeth river, when i finish work tomoro around 8 im gonna head there and give it a go. was thinking an ok spot to place a couple would be on the low tide walk to the side of the rock bar and drop them just in front of the mangroves on the mud? and then fish the wharf and bridge for the rest of the day till i can pick them up again. will let you all know how i go. and also the big chick carcasses? are they a good crab bait.

fresh barra heads or frames work good for bait in my limited experience. Everyone has different opinions tho so just trial and error and see what works the best for you I guess!

I would say fish is best - but chicken frams soked in tuna oil are a close second - if leaving the pots that long make sure bait is very secure and pot openings are not too loose.
Hey mate, if you talking about that RB next to the ramp could be a long wait. Chicken Frames and lamb bones from WW are great bait for crabs IMHO... I usually just drop it down the bridge, footpath side next to the trees out of harm. As for the jetty there is a little gutter on your left that looks ok but maybe hard to place properly. If you got one of them dillie pots (2 ring pots), they do ok of the jetty but not in fast water.
yer i know it will be a long wait for the ones next to rock bar but i have alot of time to fish and drink so beer, but will have a couple off the bridge and other places too will have them very secure and ziptied shut

Was fishing about 500m up from the bridge a few weeks back. Our boat had broken down so we were waiting for the tide to run out so we could get back to the ramp. One of the boys dropped a soft plastic over the edge (we had no bait as we were planning on lure fishing only) and pulled up a nice muddie! probably the best tasting I had ever had but that could be put down to the amount of beers we drank at the boat ramp when we got back. Anyone else ever caught a crab like that?

mate had one pot permanantly hidden in the Libby mangroves. Every day the tide was low on the way to work he would drop in some bait and after work would pick up his 1 or 2 crabs for dinner.

Yeah I think it was gulp. Fair to say the crab was pretty p...ed off when he fell into a boat.....we generally just tip any crabs we get straight onto the ice so we struggled to handle this one running around the boat! Got a laugh out of it though.
