2010 XXXX Gold Billfish Classic

Sailfish, black marlin and spanish mackerel species are targeted in this event. Darwin Game Fishing Club’s annual Billfish Classic is a three-day tag, photograph and release competition, open to all anglers, with teams consisting of two, three or four anglers. Your team challenge is to accrue the most points from the tagging of billfish and/or specifically targeting mackerel.

2010 NT XXXX GOLD BILLFISH CLASSIC

The 2010 NT XXXX Gold Billfish Classic held from 1-3 October, saw 19 teams pit themselves against the elements in an attempt to tag the elusive billfish. The boats competed in three categories over the tournament, Billfish, Mackeral and Other Species.

The first day saw two black marlin and one sailfish tagged, the first marlin by Dave Silva from Team Lowrance, followed by another black marlin by Terry Davis from Bill Collectors. The lone sailfish was tagged by Ben Peel from Power Bills. During the day there were 16 billfish raised, 5 hooked and 3 tagged.

Day two saw seven more billfish tagged, four sailfish by the eventual winning team, Reelistic, with each team member tagging a sailfish (Stuart Foote, Josh Ker, Leigh Milne and Marty Brain). Others to tag sailfish during the day included Russell Fry, Ken Brown. The only black marlin tagged for the day was tagged by Trevor Simmonds. During day two there were 15 billfish raised,11 hooked, and 7 tagged.

Day three was very tough with the weather turning during the afternoon in some of the popular fishing spots. Three sailfish were tagged during the day, one by junior Chris Paice, and the others by Ben Peel and Doug Simpson. During day three there were 28 billfish raised, 14 hooked and 3 tagged.

In the Mackerel category, Shoal Bay Sportfishing (Bob and Jeff Morris), tagged 44 mackerel, clear leaders from second place team Billfish Dreaming.

In the Other Species, Billfish Dreaming (Stuart Butler and Matt Meade) took the honours, tagging 30 fish, with Highly Strung coming in second with 26 fish.
