Thats the thing with racing them. They are high out put engines. They are built for a sprint and not the marathon. they get rebuilt every second week!

Looks like the issue might have been solved. I exchanged both fuel filters and took the boat for a spin last Sunday. Caught a few fish too, so all in all it was a good so far.
Now I just have to regain trust before heading out far.

How old is your fuel line bulb?
A mate of mine has a 40hp Tohatsu 2 stroke that was exhibiting similar characteristics to what you have described. They went through and checked everything and found the issue lay with the fuel line bulb. The return of the bulb wasn't sealing right and fuel was leaking back into the tank. As a result, the engine would splutter sometimes, over rev at others, but only in isolated random occurrences. So what initially looked like a potentially costly fix, was just a replacement of the fuel line bulb.

That's another thing I have just replaced. Together with the fuel connector and all hoses. Last time on the water I had some fuel on my hand after priming. I'll see how we go next weekend.
