Old Stacer Project.

Post by leopard_whipray »

Bought an old Stacer 4.5m from a local guy in Darwin. 50Hp 2 stroke and near new Lowrance Elite 7. Very basic, very simple. Took it to a guy to get some welding done and he noted it was a plate hull with sheet sides. Anyone know their Stacers really well??

Need some suggestions on upgrades to mainly the motor.

It's an 15year old Yammy with no tilt or trim or elec. start. (50HMHD) Don't get me wrong... strong motor but can't sneak up on anything.

Should I:
A) Spend money to by an elec trolling motor, or
B) spend money on a new 4 banger with elec. start, tilt and trim.

Sparky by trade so electrics aren't a prob. I was also thinking about conversion to a centre console. I currently have the boat stripped (nothing in it). Clean slate to work with but if I'm going to do something, I have to do it now before it's too late. I have purchased a 703 box to convert but now just sitting idle for now.

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

D.

You'll eventually want both.....

If dough was the issue you could pick up second hand gear, there's been a lot of used Minn Kotas on the market lately, and the occasional 40HP 4 stroke. You'd be pushed to fit anything bigger to a boat that size. Stick to Yammy or Suzi and you shouldn't go wrong.

Jabsy is right you will want both - i'd upgrade the main motor first, you can always pick up an electric later on but it'll be easier to work out your new console/steering/gauges/wiring for the motor now rather than down the track a bit.

Yesterday I priced up a heap of parts for a conversion other than what I already got. You could spend, I estimated, nearly $2K to convert (parts from SE Aus) or nearly $4K locally!! I think I'll stick with what I got for now, do minor upgrades (mainly alloy welding. Anyone know a good place in Darwin???) And upgrade the motor to a good second hand or many experts new 4 banger Jap outboard.

I have an older style 4.5 tinny with a 60 4 banger on the back, I think you'd want more than the 40 mentioned above, there's no substitute for hp

Definitely a 50hp... minimum!!
My brother in-law has a 40hp Honda on his 4.2m and it's flat out moving 3 people to get on the plane!

geez only 50hp! I thought the standard for a 4.5m in the territory these days is to bang a pod on the back and strap on a 70 hp yammy or a 90 suzi.

Check the rating for the boat before going overboard on HP, a 50HP 4 stroke is about 30KG heavier than the equivalent 2 stroke.

As for welding, see George at NT Unique in Yarrawonga. He can also give you the right advice on the best size motor for your boat.
