I've seen it a few times but never stopped to ponder how the damage came about, usually only checking if from one side and assuming in ran into something during the fight.
A couple of weeks ago a guide on another site mentioned that the scale loss can come as a result of a jump and associated head shake. He then put up a couple of pics to demonstrate.
Anyway saw this one last night and twigged straight away as the fish only reentered the water on occasion to breath and get some tail purchase for another jump, four in all. The single hook was right at the back of the throat, plastic ended up gone, must have upset the fish no end.
Says a lot for those head shakes, no wonder the buggers can straighten owners and VMCs, shred leader and generally bugger up fishing gear!

One thread from the vaults, couldn't remember it until I opened it
Since that post pretty well convinced that's the cause of the scale lost, checked other fish, don't get it all the time but when you do its always associated with a jumping fish.

I.ve seen line wrap make a simalar mark, maybe its a combiation of both???
When the fish jumps shaking its head it's usually moving away from the angler, so therefore the leader would probably rub on the fishes forehead causing the scales to come adrift.
Just my 2 bobs worth.

I'me with you Bullet was just about to post pretty much the same thing, when my comp froze. When you look it's only a little away from a gill racker cutting the leader? Cheers, Billy

Here's another one out of the weed beds near the crossing I got in September this year. Got a couple of other shots of other fish as well showing the same features, all scale loss is high on the shoulders and all symmetrically placed on both sides of the body. No sign in any of the shots of where line may have rubbed that I can see.

bl..dy interesting stuff Dick. The symmetrical pattern seems to go with what you are suggesting, I will certainly be keeping a closer eye on all the Baz that jump from now on. Awesome photos as well.

Having done a trip on the Ord - do you have someone standing close by with a 243 while you take em???? :hunti ng:
Keep posting those shots.....
Gammo
Funny how this post keeps popping up, shot it out of the boat hard over on a weed bed gammo, pulled it in there to stop drifting down the river. The weed also gives sometghing to the shot as well, do it on purpose now.
