Papua New Guinea - that is long way out to sea from here
In all seriousness, that is a bl..dy good question. I have often wondered how far out they get caught? Research says that there are distinct geographical DNA separation between regions - East Cape / West Cape etc but I have always wondered how much they move around and how far out they have been caught.
I guess the pros would have some pretty interesting capture distances.

you would think that the tagging from the barra classic would tell you how far they have travelled im sure the guys dealing with the recapture tags would be the best to talk to about distance traveled

Have caught one on a reef 9nm off North Melvill island on a dirty old peice of squid. It is only a shallow reef but no drying points or mud in sight. Never seen it again.

Often thought about how far out they've been caught.
As for distances, there's a tagged record for a barra here of 800km in 3 years.
Tagged near Clermont in CQ in 2007 at 40cm and recaptured in 2010 at 90cm in Corio Bay. 750k down the Fitzroy through Theresa Dam and 6 wiers to the mouth and then north for 50 km. They usually go south.

We've caught two tagged barra on the Daly. Both were tagged two years earlier in the Classic (reported them and got certificates and free lures, so worth the phone call!). So these two didn't travel too far at all. Be great to put a satellite tracker on a few metre barras. Love to know what they get up to!

Last year on my way over to the moyle we were jigging in about 45ft of water landing macs and Tuna. This was off the Perons and I hooked wat we all thought at the time was a big saltie. It came to the surface straight away, a few jumps and tossed the rubber.....now that had us pretty baffled. The 2 lads I were with reckoned they'd heard of the odd big fish out that way but a little closer into the island, not out as far as we were and not in that depth of water.

Handed in 2 tags from some barras about 10 years ago........both fish were caught at the mouth of Elizabeth creek 2 years before hand....We caught both fish also in the mouth of Elizabeth......One fish had apparently only grown 2cm and the other about 5cm from memory.

You hear bits and pieces from spearos right around the country talking about big barra mixed in with other reef fish on offshore reefs. The question in my mind is do we get a two way migration of barra at spawning time, some big girls moving into the river mouths from offshore reefs and the males moving down the river to the same spot???

When I was shark fishing years ago (net) we got one about 2-3ks out during the middle of the wet- was a swampy about70cm. The only barra I saw in 6 and a half years of shark fishing.

On the original question I meant how far out to sea they have been caught or seen, not how far they have travelled along the coast after tagging ... two different subjects. All interesting stuff tho
I've caught tarpon, blue salmon and Powertail at North Gutter, maybe there was a barra down there too.

Have caught lots of big tarpon at the deep near the south eastern end of Melvill Island. I would have loved to see a barra chase them bad boys. They would all have to be 80lb barra to get one of them down there neck.
Not sure how far off shore it is but have seen footage of a ledge near cape bowling green I think it is that they catch heaps of big barra off. They get them by using big live prawns on running sinker rigs. I thought about doing it at the mouth of shady but the power tail would destroy any bait you put over the side.
