Skids on an alloy boat should NOT bear weight they are only there to stabilize the hull, the center rollers should take the weight on alloy boats right along the keel or centerline that is their structual backbone. The more rollers the better, overloading boats on trailers is asking for hull damage.....been there done that. /quote]
Surely this could only relate to pressed tinnies, i have 2.6 tonne bearing down on the the 3 meter skids on my drive on trailer, plate bottom boats ditch the rollers PM me if you want to have a look at what a no keel roller drive on trailer looks like after a few years torture looks like. The more rollers the better, only if you sell em!!

One way to care for your trailer (and boat too) is to lighten your boat as much as possible by placing items in your tow vehicle. The other thing is to have the tiedown not too tight. A mate did a rough dirt trip with his tinny and literally 'pushed in' his floor and the boat did not perform very well after that. Long skids are essential to distribute load.

Over tight ratchet straps can cause cracks on the chine and transom corners on some weaker hulls........Tie them down firm and regulary check them......coming loose usually causes more damage.
Skids should not bear any weight, that is right, still better to have longer skids than short ones. In&Outboard Marine use a forklift to gently hold the boat level and then adjust the skids to suit the hull.

Just curios AM. How hard is it to get the boat off the trailer with those skids and no Keel rollers?
I have only seen skids used on polly boats and they are hard to get off without completly submerging the trailer. Woundering if Ally is different?
Absolutly no problem at Dundee as you could guess, on a ramp, just back in till the water is at the front guard and just drive it off, no stress. Dont forget Pete it has the 16" rims and 265/75 tyres on it so it is still pretty high, heaps of room to put the motors down to pull it off the trailer, all good.

I had a Trailit (WA) built to my specs to suit my boat. Had it 5 years now and all I have done is replace the mudguards a few weeks ago.
I have dragged it all through the Pilbara, Kimberley and NT, had some big weights in it such as 2x 44's of fuel (and many cartons of booze!) and it has not given me any trouble at all, definately money well spent and worth a look.
The galvanising is the best I have seen.
Wrap your spings and axles with Denzo tape and then wrap some stanless wire around it to keep it in place and they will last forever. Do not get slipper springs get nylon bushes and ensure you get greasable shackle pins.
Go mad with the size of your jockey wheel and get an extra heavy duty one, mine is welded on with a pivot and it is brilliant (just keep it lubed)

I don't mind the Voyager trailer except for the design looking like they are in two pieces, with the A frame being welded on and then extra brackets. My mate has one and he's had no probs with it 3 years later.

Just bought a Voyager. Dont mind spending the money as it supports a local business that produces a good product. After sales service is good also. Highly reccommended

Made my own trailer for my 5 m plate boat. Fitted load share springs. All together cost $2500. Frame is c channel bullet proof. Just heavy so I made it dual axle. Gal dipping was cheap and easy.
