...........do you think fishing is better on the full moon or no moon ???

I like the lead up to and around the new moon for all fishing, don't really like night fishing its all just that bit harder, you cant see the action and the handbags can see you better than you can see them.
Can catch plenty of fish during the day so dont see any need to go to the extra trouble.

Dont really follow the moon all that much up here but never done any good on a full moon.
Before moving to Darwin I was right into catching Mulloway. Found they were extremely fussy as to the moon position. First choice was fishing the first quarter or new moon. Second best was the last quarter. Took a couple of years worth of diarys to figure that out. Not going into tides. They took me far to long to figure out.

Fishing by day is definetly easier but i have had some good nights out from leaders on jewies.
I think the tide has a lot more to do with it but there was a great deal of debate on this subject earlier - mostly about barra fishing by night - i think the outcome of that one was that most preferred no moon for night barra fishing.

................i do most of my fishing in the salt water, in tidal esuraries mostly in the daylight as i like to stalk fish on the flats i like an outgoing tide and clean water but i like the tides to have a little bit of movement to force the fish to leave the mangrove's, i find just after the neap tides as they are building back up to spring's is best fo what i like to do so from just after half moon heading to wards full or no moon.........

The Anglers Almanac is all about the predicted best fishing times based on the phase of the moon. According to the Almanac, the best times to fish is 1/ The new moon to the first cresent 2/ Two days either side of a full moon. Note :- The moon is not always apparent in the sky as it can be between the observer and the sun. ie Does not need to be night. According to the Almanac this weekend feb 9th & 10th 2008 is suppose to be a good weekend. ie Start of New moon. Does anyone else look at the Almanac and do you think the predicted fishing times are accurate/any good. ie This Saturday the best time to fish is at 1.20pm or is it

A mate of mine was given one for Xmas by a well meaning relly a few years ago - my opinion was that it had absolutely no relevance to the Top End at all

Fishful,
Have been in Daly River for a couple of years now and have observed that around the crossing that this can be pretty well spot on when accessible. There are a couple of regulars around that will be here at a certain time and when you trace back to the almanac, it is on the best dark shade. I am by no means an expert, but those guys who use it / refer back to it, are pretty darn good. Wouldn't count on it at present though, fishing is really slow here and the river is on the rise again.
At Maningrida however, the Liverpool River was always better on the neap tides regardless.

Dick, Thats pretty good information you have there. I always mean to record details of fishing trips, but have not got around to it yet. There are a lot of other factors that would also effect the catch rate other than the moon. ie Local conditions, etc. I reckon on average my catch rate would be 0.1 fish per trips, thats why I really need to improve the way I do things !!
