Just got off the ph to DPC.. Apparently the Aerator pump karked it and they replaced it with one 1/4 capacity of the origional..can't get the harvester in to clean up the algae.Replacement pump ordered but won't get here till after Chrissie. Old pump 20l/sec..Current pump 5l/sec. Looks like a lot more fish are doomed yet.

All of the cr.p that has been sitting on the ground during the dry and that has been washed in the lakes hasnt helped either. As it decays, it removes O2 from the water. You would think the council would be aware of it and keep the aerators going

Why dOes a dam Need air rating ??? Cos of all the foliage falling in ???? Don't the Lillie's and natural water plants do the job ??? I know a dam me ad my old man stocked with hundreds of barra and tarpon never had any air ration at all was quite a large dam though 90% of the fish died a while ago in a real big dry season it not down to about a foot deep and there was hundreds of pelicans and jabaru's there eating them all !!! 4 years ago the guy that owns the dam now pulled a 94cm out of there !!

Palmerston Council said they were going to get that weed harvester going before the wet to prevent the spread of the weed. Apparently it needed some repairs. Seems they have done jack again. Surely our continuing escalating rates should cover this. No impressed Palmo council

Not only that all the fertiliser that people put on thier lawns gets washed down into the street during the wet and ends up in the storm water run off. If the run off ends up in the lakes it encourages rapid weed growth , not the type of weed that is conducive to good fish health, and as the fertilizer breaks down it removes O2 from the water.
Similar problem in Jabiru when I lived there , at times the lake was so choked with weed you could near walk across it . It was a major job cleaning out the weed, lots of dinghies with rakes towed behind , tons of weed piled up ,we soon learnt not to fert the lawns before the wet.

Spot on Bluey Most people arent aware that everything that is on the ground, backyard, roads etc eventually ends up in the drains and is washed into the lakes/ocean I saw the council mowing lawns on the verges the other day and the grass cuttings were blown over the road. as soon as it rains, that washes down the drains and into the lakes. Anything that breaks down uses O2 and depletes it from the water. Like us, fish need 02, they breathe it in via gills
The blue green algae blooms down south are directly related to cr.p washed into the rivers/dams etc.

at least the council got the weedeater going a bit to do the lakes in Gunn, must have broken down at least 3 times whilst doing them and getting rid of the salvinia though.
Lakes don't look too bad now, a few fish being caught there too.
Quite a few redclaw floating belly up ATM though, probly due to whats in he runoff into the lakes!! All sorts of stuff from back yards!!
