ABC's Catalyst doing its job

Post by Matt Flynn »

Interesting the fuss being made over the ABC's Catalyst mobile phone episode ... http://www.news.com.au/entertainment/tv ... c0209118dc

Only last month some preliminary study results were released showing that irradiated rats were getting brain and heart tumors. This followed other observations suggesting brain tumors in people, the significance of which is still debated.

Might only be a small as yet unclear risk, but it deserves to be reported so people can decide for themselves. Instead, the reporter was suspended.

Interestingly, the same thing happened when Catalyst did a story on the hugely profitable statin cholesterol drugs ... http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health ... 6914999262

Lipitor is one of the best selling drugs in history ... http://www.crainsnewyork.com/article/20 ... lling-drug

And that's only one brand of statin.

You only have to look through medical forums to see that statins are not benign, and there has been plenty of debate about whether the side effects and cost are worth the small benefit in people who are otherwise healthy.

ABC management needs to grow some balls and support its reporters in these important matters.
