Dayna's first fish - Grunter and a couple of Flathead
G'day guys,
Headed out to East Arm again with our au-pair Dayna, this time with the intention to get her a fish. The morning started off pretty slow and as the tide continued running out we headed up Reichardt Creek to fish the low. We started off by checking out a few of the drains without much luck at first and eventually settled by one of the larger drains. Persevering for half an hour or so seemed to work as Dayna hooked up; well at first she thought she was snagged until it started to run and head shake, she was supa excited to say the least. The fish put up a bit of a tussle and as she brought it close to the boat, it surfaced; at first I wasn't too sure what it was until we netted it and brought it aboard. Upon a closer look Dayna had landed a nice sized Grunter, the pretty little thing went 44cm and after a few pictures, we popped him back in. She was stoked, Dayna's first fish in the Northern Territory and Australia and it was a good one.
It was my turn next; initially caught off guard, I hook and landed a small but fanatic 54cm Barra. The little guy put on a little show for us and once we measured him up and took a few pics, we popped a tag in him and released him back from where he came.
The next couple fish we caught would surprise me beyond my expectations: Flathead. I caught the first one which went 35cm and Dayna caught the second which went 45cm. It was funny, we both were equally excited; Dayna because it was her 2nd fish in the N.T. and me because Flathead was a species I wasn't expecting to catch up here let along two. We released both of them to fight another day; I later found out that Flathead do frequent the harbour, go figure.
All in all it was a great day out on the water and a day of firsts for both Dayna and I. I'm hoping the next time we head out, she'll hook up and land a decent Barra.
Cheers

Great report, harbour can be such a great spot, and it doesn't get much closer to the city than Reichardt Ck

They are bar-tail flathead from memory, they get to a respectable size but nothing like dusky flathead

Hey Matt,
By the look of things, you may want to consider adding some of your client adverts on this thread for maximum audience exposure???

My missus wouldn't let me get a Au'pair that looked like that. I'd have to hire some Mary Poppins cross Mrs Doubtfire lookalike.

That said, I have submitted a story to Matt Flynn on a recent Litchfield trip my daughter 'Savannah, Dayna and I embarked on recently; which hopefully will feature in one of the up and coming NT Mags.
