hey nomad, what brand sounder do you use? The quality and clarity is fantastic.

Surely those arches arn't jellyfish.

hmm i have a Garmin, same problem, shows too many fish. :|

Can't catch em though most of the time.

Just turn the gain right down till you can't see any fish, no problems.

If you start catching them, turn it up again and say, "told ya they were there" :D
If there is water and it holds fish, then it is fun trying to fool them into eating what you offer!!

Especially when you can see them!

I've done quite a bit of scuba diving in the harbour, and the image on the sounder while boat at rest over a dive site, compared to the what's actually down there is quite amazing.

There are areas with "forests" of quite tall whip coral (2-3 meters) over near Platter Rock - you should see what that does to the sounder  - how you would interpret it without having been down
there I don't know?

My real issue with sounders is this - I can understand 'fish' soundings showing and no fish being caught (OK - their not in the mood, or not hungry).
But - pulling fish in hand over fist with no sonar returns showing on screen - now that does my head in :bonk:

I cant get the hang of reading them. I do find it very handy for knowing the depth though and the GPS. Can anyone advise where one can do a course to read the sonar?

same problem, shows too many fish.

Had a bit of a chuckle over this post, been in similar situations myself heaps of fish on sunder BUT nothing biting???

We fishermen are a fussy mob :bonk: , perhaps we should just fish without the sounders, if we get a fish it's a bonus..... :D
Sorry Nomad cant help with the solution except as some have suggested most of the fish are powertails. Sometimes you get same sounder displays at Corroboree and its wall to wall with tampon..erghhh tarpon :banghead: .

On my boat, we call my Humminbird Sounder a liar-bird all the time for this very reason.

My father in law reckons that all the sounder signals from boats in a small area ie shady mouth sometimes puts the fish off as well.... dont know if there's any fact to this though.
