Just got back from thailand. and spent a day fishing at a place called Bungsamran lake in Bangkok.
This place is awesome (although a bit hard to find), with thousands upon thousands of BIG Mekong Powertail to be caught.
If you go with a guide off the net it will cost you around $200-$300, but if you just rock up it cost me about $110, including one rod and reel, your own bungalow to relax in whilst fishing, all bait and a Thai fishing guide to do all the dirty work. Great value!
The bait used is a burley mixture similar too the burley used for herring (or tommy ruff for you croweaters out there) molded into a BIG ball on a berley cage with a trailing hook unbaited underneath. (See photos if they work!). They mix it up with what smells like banana essence.
From the first cast it was on with fish averaging 15kgs with my biggest about 20kgs, bit there are MUCH bigger fish here! I saw a pom catch one tha went 77kgs while i was there!

The gear that they used was a medium sized boat rod with about a 6000 size eggbeater with about 15-20kg line. The drag on mine was a bit sticky, and occassionly the gears would slip, resulting in a rapid clunking sound. Auto,auto (because it sounded like automatic gunfire) the guide would scream while laughing his arse off :lol:

All in all a great day out, and highly recommended 8-)

I have some cards i got off the guide if anyone is interested, he is a good bloke who knows what he is doing, although it might be worth waiting until you are in thailand before you call and getting another thai to talk to him as his english is poor. P.S. Can someone tell me an easy way to downsize and post my photos. I'm not real good with computers and have just spent the last hour banging my head against a brick wall! :banghead:

The website link above is a dud but if you go to www.geocities.com/bungsamran/bungsamran.html you should find it. Although dated it will give you the adress and any other information you need.

Sounds like a good trip... big Powertail hmmm I get enough Powertail here :lol:

I have a friend who just moved over there last week so I am hoping to get over there in the next 12 months :grin:

never know I might fit in a fish when I am there :roll:

Still having dramas trying to download these photos! :bonk:

Have managed to downsize but when I try to post it tells me "The extention bmp is not allowed" Any ideas anyone?????????

Change them to a JPEG as BMP is not allowed ....just change the file type when you save it :mrgreen:

That big ball of bait is wild..... they must be fun to catch (even if they are powertails :bricks:

Look at the bait - I think it would stay on the hook better if it was baked first :mrgreen:

Never fails to amaze me how different fishing methods and fish are around the world.

Just look at how those those crazy South Australians sit on jetties all night using maggot baits to catch tommies for example ... :grin:

sh!t they must taste ordinary / kill you if the thais wont eat them ....

2rods, I wouldn't touch one over here either! But i've seen a lot of people do a lot ofstrange things in Thailand that they wouldn't (admit to) do here! :roll:

No way would I eat them, it is catch and release only would you believe! I have seen them in the markets over there.
