Proposed new NT fishing regulations

Talk about bungled boat ramps, net buybacks, marine no-go zones, mining disasters etc here.

You can't honestly expect us to take you "maths equations" as anything other than an uneducated guess can you????
:? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :? :?

I dont know about your uneducated guesses but I would asses mine to reasonable educated considering I have seen it day in day out for nearly 10 years at that grounds and how much affect it has had to the area. I also have contacts in the fisheries that give inside info to the industry and what is going on around the place and what the fish habits are and what the stocks are doing.

To go with this it is a subject that I am passionate on as I would love to be able to go fishing every time and be able to catch my bag limit instead of going out and not catching a fish and having a higher bag limit! This is why I do a lot of reading of the research and such to gain a better understanding. This might not add up to a marine biology degree or a piece of paper gained by somebody that sits inside and looks at statistics all day and comes to the conclusion what he is being told is true or right but there info combined with experiance and experiance of living here from berth helps to give a reasonable idea of what is going on around the place.

Have a little think about things and look at photos of fish that used to get pulled from those grounds and judge for yourself what gets caught out there now.

I know it might seem harsh on amatures but the realism is that fish stocks are falling badly and repairing the damage will need a major shake up on all fronts to repair some of it. Sure you could leave it and see what happens and hope for massive changes but when the damage is done its nearly irrepairable. Better to be proactive and make as many small changes that all add up untill the bigger ones can come in.

As for talk to people in the commercial trade well I do and have for a long time all be it not as much recently because I got out of commercial fishing and charters.

I agree with every one to some extent that in an ideal world we could simple push the pros out further and push the charters out wider and gain greater access to better fishing grounds for ourselves by installing ramps and so on but
All in all this doesnt change the amount of produce comming out of the sea. It mearly changes the pressure points a little but doesnt put more fish in the sea or give them a chance to sporn or help there life cycle in any way. Instead it destroys more ground further and further affield and makes it even harder in the future.

The other question is how do you get more area to fish with native title. Good luck on that one!

As for up grading I know that some people do it but as a rule most people do the right things and the attitude can be changed by everyone else frowning on the practice and changing the attitude that amatures dont do damage when really we do as much as any one through the sheer number of vessils on the water on any given day. Heres one for you. Put a registration number on your boat so that you can be identified if you did the wrong thing and upgraded! Rego on boats is not what I or anyone wants for that matter but complain two loudly and thats what will happen!

cuddly cooper you only wont the limit lowered so you can go out and tell eveyone yeah was awesome days fishing bagged out on jewies was unreal????? even if it was only 2 of them all day hahhahahah if you cant catch them how come the pros are still catching them by the truck lucks locally around charles point still?? its knowledge they have through doing it for a living so i say move them out further and put a no commercial zone 200km from darwin they dont have a limit so whats an extra night out there going to harm them to cover fuel expenses normally the first 5 jewies cover that anyways at charles point

You said

On any given day you would see 30 amatuer boats x 3 people =5400 dead Jewfish
Firstly i find it impossible to believe that there was an average of thirty boats out there every day for the months of March and April. I know you have "seen it day in and day out for 10 years" but I don't believe you if you are saying this is true.
Secondly I also find it impossible to believe that each of these alleged 30 boats a day catches its bag limit everytime they go out. As an expert in all things fishing like yourself would be aware 10% of Fisherman catch 90% of the fish. I would bet plenty that a lot of those "thirty" boats you see would go home fishless a lot of the time.

Then you say that all the Charter boats have some pact that they only keep one per person which is bollocks as far as I am concerned although I have no hard evidence that this is the case only what I have seen when I have been either on one of these charters or in the vicinity of one. The other thing is these charter boats are skippered by blokes that i would assume know how to find the fish and would pretty much be able to bag out at will.

My major issue with your undeducated guesses is I think you have given the worst case scenario for the amatuer catch 5400 and the best case scenario for the Charter catch 2400. I have no idea about the commercial side of it so am willing to take your word for it on that.l

I am glad you have more than ten years experience fishing out there you should probably right a book but to me you just come accross a s a know all. Don't get me wrong I would be happy if they closed Charles Point down for twelve months to let the fish regenerate. But I think the figures you waived around are the stuff of fantasy. If we are going to get something positive done it needs to be done on fact not on some figures you and your mates dreamed up

Fellas stop playing each other and stick to the issue. If you want fisheries managers to take us seriously you need to keep it smart. If you want to keep abusing each other take it into the Fight Club forum.

Holly jesus, I go away for a day and I get hammered, good shitt. Sounds like a lot of passionate fishermen.

First off the bat for Mr Corey, my diary suggests, Mr Corey that we have met on a couple of occasions the first dating back to 3rd 4th and 5th of may 2004 in Bynoe harbor infront of crab claw island when you parked up beside me while I was at anchor with my decky fishing in the evening while not on hire (and not on the Jetty reef which everyone has) and proceeded to hit the waypoint button on your GPS to mark the ground. In your credit you swapped me for a another mark that you said was off a old pro fisherman but a dog act none the less. Dont forget Geoff you are a Coxwain too.

To help you remember, the function was for the Port Adelaide football clup head honchos who had a private competition running and they had hired out the whole of the crab claw resort. I was skippering the original Equinox vessil and you were doing your barra thing. This was the first run in we had and you said then that I was competitive and you where right in your judgement there. We have since only had breif run ins while on the water but not full on converse apart from on this site.

As for the fisheries info it isnt any thing specific and it isnt any actual figures or personal details. In a greater part it is ideas and suggestions for possible regs and rule changes and them gathering info off the charter boats to assist in there research. They caught a lot of their fish for thier research into otolith bones and aging to go with baratrauma and the sonar tagging onboard these vessils. It is simply ideas on how to improve the fishing and keep it as good as it was.

To go with this is my gathering of info on fish behaviours and a lot of info on baratrauma and the likes that benifitted the way I fished (to try and do the right thing by fish stocks as a skipper) on charter in the fact that I knew what fish I could release at a personel set size limit and what was best to take a set number rather than size. I gathered this info from fisheries when they werer onboard the charter vessils doing there research as they used these vessils as a means to gather their data that makes all these discussion papers available to the amature sector now.

The Equations I admit are not scientific fact but are observations from personel experiance and I agree would not be as accurate as scientific fact. On neap tides when the fish were on the chew I had counted up to 60 boats in a 5km square area and on a slow day when the weather was bad or the tides were too big the number was down to about 10 boats but they all added up.

How ever the figures that were shown in the Jew discussion paper that Matt Flynn posted from Fisheries are scientific fact and would back up this info as they show that the amature sector caught more than the commercial sector back then all be it not a site specific paper but one could assume that a large percentage of those fish are going to be caught close to Darwin as that is the greatest fishing effort.

The one big change there is that the Regs have already changed from 5 Jew per person to 2 Jew per person so the figures would be different and only fisheries have the current data so they will work it out no doubt.

The only thing more that I can use to re-itterate with is the poll on FFF that suggested that the Jew are harder to come by as a majority suggested with a few unsure and last I checked nobody said that it was getting easier even with GPS, side scan sonar and so on. :drinking5: :drinking1:
